Do injections hurt?
For me, most of the time they do, but I’ve gotten used to it. Some spots are more sensitive than others, some days I am more sensitive than others.
What if you’re a person that doesn’t like needles?
The only thing I can say to this is “too bad”. Seems harsh but so is DKA and coma. There are some days I have to take a deep breath before doing my injections. Some days it stings and some days even the lancet for the glucometer stings.
Does that mean you can’t eat ____?
I am allowed to eat whatever I want but anything carb related will cause my BG to increase. It’s all about monitoring and moderation.
Why does high BG make you hungry (or thirsty)?
Excessive hunger with uncontrolled or high BG is a result of low insulin levels. As insulin’s job is to allow glucose to enter the body’s cells for energy, when there isn’t enough of it, the cells don’t get energy for fuel. This results in the cells sending out ‘hunger signals’ because as far as they are concerned, if there’s no fuel you need food.
Excessive thirst is often thought to be caused by increased urination (another major symptom) but it actually is a result of the dehydrating effect of increased urination. Confused yet?…. As the kidneys receive signals that BG levels are high they try to balance out levels. Simply put, this is done by drawing other fluid out of cells to flush the high BGs, which in turn causes the kidneys to work harder, creating more pee. Coming back around to thirst- now that the cells are losing fluid due to kidneys increased work, thirst signals are sent out. So really, the increased urination is causing the increase in thirst. Crazy, right?
